The Problem and the Reality of Work Culture and Work Environment
We are all supposed to go to our office or place of work to work, do our duties and earn a livelihood.
But many times you experience a bad office culture or a bad work environment in an organization or company or you may experience a good office culture or work environment turning into a bad one for you in due course of time.
You may feel helpless, frustrated, angry, fearful and there may also be feelings of jealousy, anxiety and insecurity built up inside you as you go to work in your office each day.
These negative feelings and negativity around you are mainly not because of the work that you actually do or the quality of work that you handle but is because of your co-workers and your bosses and the management that constitute the work culture and the work environment at your workplace.
You should be aware of the fact here that there are two categories of employees which form an organizational structure and culture.
One is the management which constitutes the people managers, team leaders, directors, vice presidents, etc. and the other are the employees who are not people-oriented but are individual contributors.
The employees in the management get the work done from the employees who are individual contributors.
So there is inherently a dichotomy, a class system, a conflict that is always present in any organizational structure and company culture.
The employees in the management and the leadership team are perceived to be belonging to the higher class while the non-management employees are considered to be in the lower class in the hierarchy even though the major bulk of the work and the actual value creation is done by the non-management employees of an organization.
The higher class of employees in the management are entitled to a much higher salary, perks, benefits, privileges and much faster growth and promotions than the lower class employees of the non-management category.
It is a hidden truth that the people in the management look down upon the people working under them as non-management employees although it is not evident and obvious at the surface in a modern corporate organization.
Therefore, in many instances, if you are not in the management of an organization then it is very easy to suppress and control you and many times your skills, talents, passions and your ambitions and motivation toward your work and career are crushed.
There is definitely office politics and favoritism which play a big role in the rise or fall of an employee in an organization.
If you revolt and experience bitter conflicts with your bosses or the management then it is you who is at the receiving end.
Your job can be at stake and by some means or the other, you will be asked to resign or terminated or forced to leave due to reasons shown like re-engineering. You must have heard this saying quite often that the “boss is always right”.
So this cultural dichotomy and the class system still exist in modern and advanced offices and organizations.
On the other hand, if you have good terms and relationships with your bosses and the management or if you are on the good books of your boss then there is no problem and you should feel lucky to be working at your workplace.
You will be appreciated for your efforts and there will be many kinds of incentives that will be given to you from time to time like promotions, good salary increments, better job profile, etc which will motivate you to perform better and you will always feel like staying and working in your organization for a long time.
It will be still better if you are offered a management position in your organization which does happen based upon your capacity and performance.
But the problem comes when you fail to keep and maintain a balance with your seniors, superiors and your bosses. That needs to be addressed and a solution needs to be there.
The second aspect with regard to a bad office work environment or company culture is to do with your co-workers and office colleagues with whom you work at your workplace of an organization.
We must consider the fact that we all go to work in an office in an organization where each one of us belongs to different family backgrounds with our own unique story about our life, education, work history, professional qualifications, skills, talents and abilities.
So, the work culture is diverse and sometimes overwhelming where people from different age groups with gender differences and different sexual orientations all come and work together.
There is no problem as long as your co-workers are helpful, friendly and cooperative with you but the problem comes in when jealousy, rivalry and competition among your teammates surfaces.
That definitely manifests into negativity which spoils the healthy work environment in an organization.
On top of that if you fall into the trap of getting obsessed and fixated with a particular team member of the opposite gender due to any reason like sexual attraction and distraction or office romance and affair can cause great miseries, sufferings, anxiety, fear, anger, jealousy and a disturbed mind which can negatively affect your work performance and your relationships with your bosses.
This can lead to instances like sexual harassment and general desperation which can result in your termination from your job or you can be asked to resign or forced to resign from your job. There are chances that an employee may even commit suicide in such cases.
This resultant work culture at the workplace has directly emanated from the sexual revolution that has happened in our modern times.
How to Improve your Workplace Culture and Environment
If you are currently experiencing such a toxic relationship or work environment or a toxic office culture due to your bosses or management or due to your office co-workers then changing your job and workplace to a new and different organization is not really going to help. That is like going over to another "madhouse" and drinking poison at your workplace every day.
It is only going to give you a temporary solution to a problem that is inherent in any traditional work culture and organization.

My answer to that is the internet, technology and remote, virtual and work from home employment.

You are in control of whom to contact and when to get in touch, interact and communicate with and no one can intrude into your privacy just like that which all mitigates the risks, dangers and problems related to bad office culture and work environment to a very great extent.
And in terms of opportunities, career growth and success on the internet as a remote and virtual worker, you can check out my following articles where I have explained them in detail and I have tried to provide you with a solution.
