The Problems While Dealing With A Bad And A Difficult Boss
Let me call a spade a spade here. If you are an employee of an organization (private or public), business, company, firm, corporate or of the government then you are a servant of that business entity.
You are supposed to provide some service or value to that business entity as a servant where your boss or the person you are reporting to becomes your master.
Your boss can be your direct employer i.e. the owner of the company you are working for or your boss can also be a part of the management who becomes your manager or supervisor.
So it can be called as an employer-employee or a master-servant or a labor-supervisor or a manager-worker or a leader-follower relationship. In a slightly different perspective it can also be a teacher-student or a parent-child relationship between you and your boss.
Your boss is neither your friend nor your enemy. It is just that your boss has been given a job of getting the work done from you for which you have been hired.
Your manager or your boss is skillful in the art of getting things done through others by various ways and means that he finds suitable or as it deems fit.
There is nothing wrong with this set-up. Had we been programmed like automated machines or robots then this system of doing your work or adding your value or rendering your service as per the guidelines and the instructions laid out by your boss to get the desired results from you for the overall profitability and efficiency of the business entity would be running year after year perfectly and without any problems.
But this is not the case in the actual reality of a physical work environment. We are humans and you and your boss are not God.
We have emotions and feelings and our situations and circumstances keep on changing forever. So there is always a subjective and a personal element between you and your boss.
For whatever reasons or due to any personal and professional circumstances and situations the problem comes when your boss becomes bossy over you.
I know it will really boil your blood if every time your boss tells you what to do and what not to do or most of the time he asks you about the status of your work.
It gets worse when your boss is shouting at you, is rude to you, is threatening you, is harassing you, is bullying you, is abusing you, is monitoring you and keeping a watch on you, is denying you of certain privileges or work opportunities or incentives like salary hike, increments, bonuses or promotion which all really hits very badly.
It also hurts when your boss ignores you or humiliates or insults you either in front of others or in private.
It is an example of a bad and an unprofessional authority, boss or a leader when he is showing his anger, arrogance and second class behavior on you, is dominating you, is trying to have control on you and makes you feel inferior to him by showing that he is superior and smarter than you and you are the dumb ass with no brains.
In certain cases there are conflicts and ego clashes or issues between you and your boss which mainly happens when your own colleague becomes your boss and it becomes difficult for you to accept your own team member as your boss.
I know it is really a helpless and hopeless situation where you cannot defeat your boss as certainly he has been given more powers, backing, support and privileges than you have in your employment.
List Of Solutions For Dealing And Managing With a Bad And A Difficult Boss
If you are going through such a hostile work environment with a bad and a difficult boss to deal with on a daily basis then here are a few things which you can do to become successful in your employment and in your overall career.
1. Always remember that no matter what kind of boss you might have, your boss is your client or even a customer to you.
As long as you are in a particular employment your boss and the management will keep on buying your work or service from you. In return, your boss is responsible for putting money in your pocket by paying you or rewarding you in the form of a monthly salary or a paycheck or commission or any other kind of incentives like salary increments, bonuses, gifts, career growth and promotions, paid leaves and vacations and other allowances.
2. Therefore, choose an employment in a business entity where you are paid to play and not paid to work or provide service.
What I mean by this is to choose your work, job or career in an organization that you will enjoy doing. Where the work makes you feel as if you are playing and having fun and not working.
Each new day of your work schedule in your office should be like a new sporting adventure.
This factor can mitigate the risk of having a bad or a difficult boss to a great extent. This can ensure that you are primarily focused on your work duties because you find your work addictive in nature and so you will not need anything else like a better boss or better colleagues.
You become happy with your work as your work becomes your drug and you become that drug addict.
Let me tell you that it is possible to find such work in the job market provided you know about yourself thoroughly, your interests, passions, talents, strengths, skills and your goals in your life and career.
This will automatically boost up your confidence, productivity, output and performance where you are bound to get support from your bosses and management no matter how ruthless and barbaric they might be.
If you want more help on achieving this then you can check out my book - "How To Win A Lottery By Just Doing A Job: Win Your Work Lottery" which is available on Amazon.
3. It has become a highly competitive job market or workplace and work environment and so do not get emotionally dependent and attached to your place of work, bosses, management and your colleagues.
If you need love and emotional support then get it from your family, personal friends and your close well-wishers.
Do not ever fall in love with the company that you work for. This is a huge mistake. Instead fall in love with your own self, your talents, your knowledge, your expertise, your skills, your achievements and with your own perceived market value along with the experience and the learning that you get in return for the work that you do.
Never ever reveal your secrets and weaknesses to your boss, leadership team, and management. Always be strong and display your strengths instead, because the fact is that your boss, your leadership team and the management can be like "human parasites" always ready with any and every opportunity to make you a victim and feed on you or take advantage of you. Don't let this happen as this is a dark truth and is the negative side of your relationship with your boss. This fact is also established by an article on Forbes. You can read that here.
Always remember that you are in an employment or job not for the sake of the company or the boss that you report to or that has hired you but you are actually in an employment or job for your own self and to satisfy your own goals and career interests and reasons.
Your employment or job is just like your own business to do your work and provide the services that you are hired for and get paid and rewarded in return.
4. Please avoid getting involved in an office romance or office affair or keeping any intentions of experiencing any kind of sexual activities with your office co-workers.
They are risky and can land you into trouble in your career growth and in your future opportunities and prospects.
They look tempting but can also severely damage your mental health. This can lead to lower energy levels and lack of focus and concentration resulting in falling short of your work or performance expectations in front of your bosses or the management.
If you need love, romance and sex then get it from your spouse or personal friends outside of your work and office.
