Difference between Job and Business
Any job or any form of employment is a manual way of earning or making money whereas a true business is an automated way of earning or making money. A job involves physical or mental labor on your part on each business day to get you the money whereas a business is a kind of machine which runs automatically to get you the money. So in short, a job is a manual process whereas a business is an automation.
Let me explain this with a simple analogy. Suppose you need to go from point A to point B of 100 km. To do so you can either walk that 100 km from point A to point B or you can take your car with a driver to reach that distance.
If you walk that distance then it is like a job but if you cover that distance with the help of your car along with a driver then that is like a business where the car is the business machine and the driver is the manager or your employee.
If you walk that distance it will require your own physical and mental energy and efforts to reach point B from point A whereas if you take your car then you are not doing anything yourself; you are simply sitting in the car maybe doing something else and your driver is doing the work of running this machine to help you cover that distance.
One more aspect is the time taken to cover that distance. If you walk it is going to take more time to reach point B from point A and it is also going to be tiring, laborious and painful walking after some time whereas if you take the car you are definitely going to cover that distance much faster with no labor, pain and tiredness especially if your driver is driving your car. This is the most basic difference between a job and a business.
Now here comes the magic and that is if this 100 km distance from point A to point B actually becomes $100. You know now what I mean. And point A to point B is actually your goal, target, purpose, aim, mission, vision, direction, intent and career journey which can be related to both a job and a business.
It is not that a job is better than doing a business or doing a business is better than a job as both are easy and simple as well as difficult or complex at their own place along with their own specific drawbacks, benefits and rewards. In fact, both jobs and businesses are required to run an economic system.
But if you are just starting out in your professional career I recommend that you start your journey by doing a job even if you have an established family business. A job will give you a hang and an experience of a business in actual reality.
Moreover, another major difference between a job and a business is that there is no money investment at your end to do a job. A college degree is mainly enough to do a job.
Taking again the analogy of point A and point B of 100 km, it is actually free with no money investment on your part to cover this distance by walking. The only investment to walk that distance is your fitness, health, energy, labor, motivation, focus, effort, and hard work.
While on the other hand if you are taking the car to cover that distance then you will first need to have a lot of money to buy that car and pay your driver. And you should only buy the car if you have a passion, knowledge and interest in cars. Although, you can also build your own customized car with your own hands and drive it by your own self that will also require some money now and then to buy the nuts and bolts and other parts of that car. You would also need to acquire specialized knowledge and training which all requires some monetary investment in the first place along with the passion, energy and labor to build that car and run it.
But at the same time, it is obvious that taking a car to cover that distance is far more advantageous, beneficial and rewarding in the long run than simply walking that distance as this car or the business machine is automating all your daily manual labor and hard work with an initial money, knowledge and technology investment. However, it is also your responsibility to keep your car in good working condition as whenever it breaks down or has problems it will require your attention, money and labor for its maintenance.
This is business and this is what happens in an actual business. On the other hand if you are just walking to cover that distance then there is no actual liability on you as the only thing that you need to focus and maintain is your own self and your own mental and physical fitness.
For example a man cleaning and doing repair work on a ship is a job for him as he is putting his time, hard work and efforts each time that he is getting paid for doing that work. Whereas a man who owns that ship is getting paid for doing nothing on that ship and probably his physical presence is also not required there as whatever revenue and profits that ship is generating as a business machine, a share of that goes inside the pocket of that owner of the ship. Similarly, a man working on his laptop to do coding is a job for him as he is putting his time, effort, skill and mental labor to do the coding each time that he is getting paid for doing that work. Whereas the same laptop can become a business machine for him if he generates an income and profits by building a website by using that laptop where the money goes inside his pocket even while he is sleeping or is on vacation.

So you can see that there are both advantages and disadvantages in both a job and in a business.
